After MDMK MLA Veera Elavarasan's death Election Commission, announced sudden by poll, (which was unexpected to the ruling parties), made a strong opinion that the Thirumangalam Election Results might foresee the forthcoming General Election 2009.

The bypoll for Thirumangalam Assembly constituency, will be held on 9th January 2009.

The constituency is witnessing a triangular contest between DMK's Latha Adiyaman, widow of a former party MLA, AIADMK's M. Muthuramalingam, the party's Madurai Rural District Deputy Secretary, and actor-politician Vijaykant's DMDK nominee T. Danapandiyan.

MDMK, whose sitting member Veera Elavarasan's death necessitated the byelection, has given the seat to AIADMK.
