Satyam Computers

The chairman of Satyam Computer Services, a leading Indian information technology company that serves numerous Fortune 500 companies, resigned on Wednesday after disclosing major accounting irregularities, sending Satyam’s shares down 77 percent, The New York Times’s Heather Timmons and Bettina Wassener reported.

Ramalinga Raju resigned after revealing that the company’s financial position had been massively inflated during the course of the company’s expansion from a handful of employees into an outsourcing giant with 53,000 employees and operations in 66 countries.

Mr. Raju said Wednesday that 5.4 billion rupees, or $1.04 billion, of the 53.6 billion rupees in cash the company reported at the end of its second quarter that ended in September were nonexistent.

In a lengthy statement to the Bombay stock exchange, he described how the gap had grown over several years. “What started as a marginal gap between actual operating profit and the one reflected in the books of accounts continued to grow over the years. It has attained unmanageable proportions as the size of company operations grew,” his statement said.

Satyam provides systems and software, and serves as the back office for some of the largest banks, manufacturing and media companies in the world. Clients include General Electric and General Motors.

In some cases, the company is responsible for keeping track of its clients’ own transactions with their customers, and the clients’ own books.

Satyam, which in a separate statement said it was “shocked” by Mr. Raju’s revelations, has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since May of 2001 and on Euronext since January 2008. The company is audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which had no immediate comment.

Satyam has been under scrutiny in recent months, after an October report that the company had been banned from World Bank contracts for installing spy software on some World Bank computers. In December, the World Bank confirmed that Satyam had been banned but did not elaborate on the cause.

Also in December, Satyam’s investors revolted after the company proposed buying two firms with ties to Mr. Raju’s sons. That acquisition, was “the last attempt to fill the fictitious assets with real ones,” Mr. Raju said in his statement Wednesday.

The scandal immediately raised questions over accounting standards in India as a whole, as observers asked themselves whether similar problems existed elsewhere. The risk premium for Indian companies will rise in investors’ eyes, Nilesh Jasani, India strategist at Credit Suisse, told The Times.

News of the scandal — quickly compared to the Enron scandal in the United States — sent jitters through the entire Indian stock market on Wednesday, sending the benchmark Sensex stock market index down 7 percent by late afternoon.

“This was a company which had the most high profile independent director. It had an auditor of significant repute,” Tarun Siodia, head of research at Andand Rathi, told Reuters. “Despite that, if such an event can occur, then why not other companies? That is going to raise bigger issues.”

R.K. Gupta, managing director at Taurus Asset Management in New Delhi, also speaking to Reuters, added: “If a company’s chairman himself says they built fictitious assets, who do you believe here? Not only Satyam, this has put a question mark on the entire corporate governance system in India.”

Just a few months ago, Mr. Raju was trying to convince investors that the company was sound. In October, he surprised investors with better than expected results, saying he was “pleased” that the company had “achieved this in a challenging global macroeconomic environment, and amidst the volatile currency scenario that became reality.”

But by late December, it seems he had little support from board members or investors: Four of the company’s directors resigned in recent weeks.

Samsung launches iPhone look-alike Omnia

Korean technology group Samsung launched a new touchscreen smartphone on Monday, hours before Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs was expected to announce a new version of the iPhone.

Like the iPhone, Samsung's Omnia aims to make internet browsing easy, and has a wide screen for viewing video as well as music capabilities and a 5 megapixel camera. It runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile software.

The original iPhone transformed the market for so-called smartphones with computer-like functions a year ago and the industry is eager to see whether Apple can repeat its success with a new version, expected to run on faster, 3G networks.

According to photographs released with a statement from Samsung, the Omnia resembles the original iPhone in its dark, shiny finish, curved edges and slim form.

The phone will be unveiled at the CommunicAsia trade fair in Singapore starting June 17 and go on sale in South-East Asia that week. It will be available in Europe in July.

Shipping Corporation Of India

The year-end review released by the department of shipping (MoS) seems to have unnerved port and shipping industry circles which have been
looking at it for some kind of lifelines to navigate out of the present crisis. With nothing more than a list of initiatives the government has taken, the review has turned a blind eye towards the recessionary trends plaguing both the sectors.

It is no secret how the financing woes and the collapse in shipping rates hitting Indian port and shipping sectors. Companies like Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) have toned down their aggressive fleet acquisition programmes, shipyards are witnessing their order volumes plunging more than 15%. The review, without a single word on the ongoing turmoil, makes it appear not rooted in reality and therefore fails to point the direction where the distraught industry is headed.

The initiatives listed in the review for the shipping include setting up of Indian Maritime University; steps taken towards protection of Indian seafarers and towards setting up National Maritime Complex; approval of cruise shipping policy; declaration of new national waterways; Navratna status to SCI and its acquisition of 3 vessels; aids to navigation and its efforts at building two shipyards.

According to the review, some of the major initiatives undertaken in the Indian port sector include finalizing the model concession agreement to ensure uniformity in the contractual agreements between major ports and selected bidders for their projects, formulation of new tariff guidelines based on normative cost by Tariff Authority for Major Ports and recommendation for a review of rail road connectivity of the major ports, etc.

In its hastily done list of activities, the ministry seems to have also forgotten to mention the only positive development in the whole of shipping sector - the moderate increase in fleet, both in numbers and tonnage.

According to industry sources, as of November 30, Indian tonnage has inched forward to about 9.3 million gross tonne (GT). The tonnage, which was at 9 million GT at the beginning of 2008 declined thereafter and it stands recouped as of now.

"Simply enumerating the initiatives would not help the industry to tide over the present crisis it is engulfed in," said a shipping company executive on condition of anonymity. "Today the industry is fighting on several fronts. It has to acquire so many ships to replace its existing fleet. On the top of it, shipping has the problem of achieving the existing share of Indian fleet in Indian exim trade. All of which will entail an estimated expenditure of Rs 90,000 crore. From where is the money going to come? With the downturn the world over, which financial institution would give this kind of funding to the industry?" he asked.

"The government is only trying to give a positive look by talking about the things they have initiated. They have to do that because elections are round the corner. But if you look at all these initiatives what dividend they are going to deliver to the industry in a situation where there is a crisis in the world markets and downward trend in freight market," said a member of Indian National Shipowners' Association (INSA).

"The initiatives are something in the positive direction, no doubt. But it is too early to talk about them before being implemented and started yielding any result.

"For example, the Maritime University, which was inaugurated on December 31, 2008. Till today the industry bodies like INSA, MASSA, and FOSMA continue to contribute to the faculty payments. Until these institutions are run on a self-sustained basis, it would remain a drain on the govt and the industry."

Galactic Alignment Galactic Alignment In 2012 Galactic Alignment Science Or Superstition

We’re continuing our year-end discussion on visions of the apocalypse. Not to scare you, but to explore why so many traditions invoke the end of the world in troubled times. One growing movement points precisely to the culmination of history as we know it on December 21, 2012, or 12/21/12.

That is the last date on the Mayan long-count calendar and the precise day arrived at by one computer analysis of the I Ching. The theory has spread from new age circles to mainstream astronomers and media, and is even being debated in college courses.

On January 4, The History Channel airs Nostradamus: 2012, speculating on prophesies by the 16th century French apothecary. A 2012 feature film by The Day after Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich is due out next summer, and a new documentary called 2012: Science or Superstition? features the naysayers, as well as supporters who foretell not cataclysm, but the dawn of a new era of enlightened human consciousness.

John Major Jenkins is among those featured in the film. He is author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 among other books, and one of the leading voices of the 2012 theory. He's known for fine-tuning the galactic alignment theory relating to 12/21/12. He explains that he doesn’t regard this as a horrific collapse of the world, though, but a time of transformation and renewal.

JMET 2009 Admissions 2009 Coverage JMET 2009 Analysis Paper On Expected Lines JMET 2009 Results

JMET 2009 RESULTS Click Me

The JMET had already been declared to be of 120 questions length and of 3 hours duration – a deviation from the previous years when the paper was of 150 questions and 2 hours duration. There were 4 sections each – of Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation – having 30 question each. Considering, that the paper was of 180 minutes that meant that one could allocate 45 minutes per section.

According to Mr. Shubhashish Mitra, VP- Acadamics, PT Education, "the paper was along expected lines with the pattern previously declared. Consensus says that the paper was easier (relatively speaking) than the one given last year."

The Verbal ability section had with 12 Reading Comprehension questions, 9 questions based on Vocabulary and rest on Grammar.

On the verbal ability section, IMS Learning says, "This section comprised questions on verbal ability as well as reading comprehension. There were 12 questions on reading comprehension and 18 on verbal ability. The passages were of medium length with mostly direct questions and a few inferential questions. But even for direct questions, the options were quite deceptive; so negating the options could take some time and careful consideration of the passage. Understanding the passages was not a major hindrance while answering the questions. The questions required you to understand and interpret the passages. There was also one word-based question based on the passage."

The Logical reasoning section had questions based on verbal reasoning as well as logical reasoning. Says IMS Learning, "In verbal reasoning, there were the usual constructs like syllogisms, jumbled paragraphs, critical reasoning (with a focus on fallacies in reasoning), course of action and statement conclusion type. Some of the questions were similar to logical reasoning in that they required a passing knowledge of mathematical concepts. The questions in this set were time consuming, as they required sound understanding of the question. Overall the level of difficulty of the LR questions was comparatively higher than the other sections."

On the Data Interpretation and Quantitative ability sections, PT education says, "DI section was of standard level – pure Data Inference. No "reasoning based" DI as in the CAT. 3 sets could have been managed comfortably in the given time – that means 12-15 questions could have been attempted. Quantitative Ability, as expected, was mainly Higher Maths. It was quite apparently, a paper framed for engineers and by engineers. Questions were challenging and 8-10 attempts in the given time were possible."

What are the cut-offs that test prep companies anticipate of JMET 09. IMS Learning says that a good overall score in JMET 09 will be in the range of 65-71 marks. PT Education says that on the whole, the cut-offs for the paper should be in the range of 45-50 with the sectional cut-offs as mentioned above. For a call from the two top IITs – IIT Mumbai and IIT Delhi, the student is expected to score in the range of 70+.
